Magazine Subscriptions
SKY & TELESCOPE
Sky & Telescope is one of the most recognized names in astronomy. Almost everyone reads it, from professional physicists to amateur telescope makers to the best astrophotographers worldwide.
Club members get S&T for $32.95/year, $2 cheaper than their cheapest non-club plan. They also receive a bundle of bonus items: Messier and Caldwell map cards, a great Mars DVD, the "Let's Go Stargazing" beginner's guide, and an S&T vinyl decal.
Sky & Tel has a somewhat complicated process for subscribing: if you're a new subscriber or currently subscribe on your own, you need to subscribe through us. If you are currently subscribing through the club, you can renew on your own.
ASTRONOMY MAGAZINE
Astronomy Magazine is often thought of as the "popular" magazine to Sky & Telescope's more serious observing and science perspective, but Astronomy Magazine's staff are doing a great job of challenging that perception. Their science articles have been steadily improving, and new sections like the short scientist interviews and the deep sky highlights (with sketches!) make for a more interesting read.
Club members subscribe to Astronomy Magazine through the club. Club members get a significant discount from the normal $43 price - we pay $34, or $9 off. If you subscribe for TWO years, though, you pay only $60 total. If you would like to take a subscription, or convert your individual subscription to a club one, please contact the treasurer.
ASTRONOMY TECHNOLOGY TODAY
ATT is the upstart, a bimonthly magazine written primarily by amateurs for amateurs. There is, as you might expect, a tendency towards equipment. It's not just about the cool telescopes and cameras and spectroscopes you can buy, though; there is frequent discussion of amateur telescope design, construction, and maintenance. There are general interest stories as well: travel stories, articles about amateur observers, etc. (Local interest: Tom Trusock, a local amateur who is well known to many for his work on the Cloudy Nights website, frequently writes for them.) It's printed on cheaper paper than the big guys, and tends to have a number of typos and grammar issues, but its heart is in the right place.
It's also available at a great price to club members: $14 per year (6 issues) or $26 for two years (12 issues). Simply subscribe online or by mail with a special discount code. Please contact me if you would like to subscribe and I can provide you a code.
