SATURN TRANSIT IN TAURUS

By Larry F. Kalinowski

On January 4, something special will happen during the evening. The planet Saturn will transit one of the most famous Messier objects on his list, the famous Crab Nebula or M1. Since the nebula is fairly large, the event will occur all through the evening, with mid transit occuring around 8 PM, EST. Saturn's brightness will probably make the nebula difficult to see, so don't be discouraged if you have trouble observing the event. In fact, it might be wise to start observing just after twilight ends, before the planet begins its movement across the nebula. Both objects should make a grand view in your eyepiece.
